What is 'OpenAthens'?
This is a free online account, which allows you to access electronic information resources paid by for by the NHS.  All NHS staff are entitled to an OpenAthens account.

How do I register for an OpenAthens account?
Complete the form here.  You must have an active, preferably Trust, email address.  You will receive an email with a link to use to create a password.  Non-Trust email addresses can take up to 15 days for approval.  See help sheet: Self-registering for an NHS OpenAthens Account.

How do I reset my OpenAthens password?
Enter your email address here.  You will receive an an email to reset your password.  You can log into OpenAthens with either your username or email address.  See also helpsheet: Managing your NHS OpenAthens Account.

What should I do if I can't access the journal article I want through OpenAthens?
If may be that the Trust does not have a subscription for that particular journal.  Please ask library staff to obtain a copy of the article for you - complete our request form.

How do I access BMJ Best Practice?
Once you have an NHS OpenAthens Account (see FAQ above), you can create a personal account for BMJ Best Practice.  Follow the steps here or see the Getting Started Guide.  BMJ Best Practice is available to use here.

How do I download the BMJ Best Practice App?
The app is available for Apple and Android (not Windows) devices.  Once you have access to BMJ Best Practice (see FAQ above), visit your app store and search for 'BMJ Best Practice'.  Select the app.  When prompted, sign in with your BMJ Best Practice 'personal account' details, and download the content.
